...We went to the year 2137 A.D.

So you want a taste of the Post Apocalyptic - the controversial conspiracy theorist Al Beliek has been there an done that. So here's a bit of taste of what the future has for us according to his time travel to year 2137 and 2749. Some of it ain't too pretty:

Ah there's nothing like being a mallrat rat in Post Apocalyptia these days. There is one interesting site that is a superstore of information about all the malls that are abandoned or being abandoned these days -

Dead Malls tackles the subjects of the rise and fall of malls in the United States and records some personal histories of Malls across all 50 states.

What will become of these places? Some are being transformed, others left abandoned. The malls could become lonely sentinals of this once powerful economic consumers of the US. So believe they deserve a small corner of the Apocalyptic Post.

Top Jobs in a Post Apocalyptic World

So a disaster happens that wipes out most of mankind, what jobs are available for you - jobs that will not only help you survive in the midst of the misery but also make you a bit of coin the side. This list is purely subject, but I base this on jobs found on the American frontier, the Wild West. The resources I drew upon were from here and here.

This not exhaustive, it more about the type of jobs available after the

Craftsman - If you have a skill, use it or lose it (the latter referring to your life). Blacksmith, Gunsmith, Mechanic, Electrician, Carpenter, Engineer - your skills can not only make you a bit of dosh in the wastelands, but it can also help make your community thrive.

Doctor - the best doctors will the ones who can do it abit of everything. Specialists maybe one tricks ponies and may not last long in a post apocalyptic world. If your skills are only as good as the technology that you use to evaluate patients, then you are going to be about as useless as hat full o' busted assholes.

Merchant - If you have access to goods (and way of keeping them safe) - you are on your way to profitting after the Apocalypes. The market economy ain't gonna die in the wasteland, it'll be perfected. Trading, bartering and sales skills will come in handy. Just make sure you keep a double barrelled shotgun close by.

Prostitute - Be it she-whore or man-whore, you can put your body to the test here. Mankinds oldest profession ain't going nowhere. If you got the goods, you flog them off to the highest bidder. In some pioneer societies it there was a 9 to 1 ratio of men to women, so you could work those number to your favour.

Entertainer/Artist - People need hope in the Wasteland. If you can sing, play a banjo, tell a good story, wrestle midgets, or get into some street preaching. Throughout hard times, artists flourished and were respected, so even if you don't make a lot of money - you are still worth something to the living if you can give them a reprieve from the burdens of life.

Farmer - People will need food. Cattle or crops, if you can grow or raise it, then you going to make yourself valuable to society. Of course you will need land for this, so you be short on good dirt. If you can get your land to work for you, I am sure you'd be a revered member of a Post Apocalyptic society.

Pillagers are anyone who can take from the living (or the dead) with minimal effort. This could be a theif, robber or a scavenger. They do not exchange any goods but rather take the rewards of other people's effort. You can later trade with others (see merchant) but beware, your fate may be the same as those you've preyed upon.(scavenger image from here)

Thats it for now, I'll come back and put more thought into this post from time to time. I've also left any semblance of civil jobs (such politians, lawyers and tax agents) out of the picture. Hopefully these will be gone after the Apocalypse. See, the wasteland may not be such a bad place after all?

Ludwig Meidner: Precursor of the modern Post Apocalyptic Artist

Ludwig Meidner was an artist famous for his Apocalyptic Landscapes that seem to prophesize horrors of the first World War. From Wikipedia:

Ludwig Meidner (Bernstadt, Silesia, 18 April 1884 – Darmstadt, 14 May1966) was a German expressionist painter and printmaker. He was apprenticed to a stonemason, but the apprenticeship was not completed. He studied at the Royal School of Art in Breslau and, from 1906-07 at the Julien and Cormon Academies in Paris where he met and became friends with Amedeo Modigliani. He returned to Berlin to work as a fashion illustrator and produced realistic if uninspired views of Berlin.

In 1912 he began a series of paintings which marked a radical departure in style and would make his reputation. The "Apocalyptic Landscapes" anticipate the horrors of the first world war by several years. The series, produced rapidly in a hectic heatwave, are some of the purest "expressionist" works, portraying the terror of the modern city in catastrophic settings; comets cross the sky like canon shells, fires rage, men scream and flee for their lives, buildings totter on the edge of collapse. Meidner would however never repeat the intensity and creativity of the apocalyptic landscapes.

After the first world war his art turns to producing religious paintings including a long and repetitive series of portraits of "prophets". He is a habitual self portraitist producing a remarkable series of Rembrandt inspired self portraits that provide a vivid illustration to his passing years. His portraits from 1915 to the end of the 1920s are a gallery of the leading expressionist and Dada writers and poets. Meidner himself increasingly turned to writing - he produced several books of dense expressionist prose and contributed to many newspaper articles.

In 1939 he fled with his family to England (his wife Else Meidner was also an artist) where he was interned as an enemy alien on Isle of Man. He stayed in England, unrecognised, working in odd jobs until 1953 when he returned to Germany. In 1963 he had his first major exhibition since 1918 in Recklinghausen and Berlin. He died on 14 May 1966 in Darmstadt, aged 82.

Duck and Cover was a civil defense film (sometimes also characterized as a social guidance film or propaganda) produced in 1951 (but first shown publicly in January 1952) by the United States federal government's civil defense branch shortly after the Soviet Union began nuclear testing. Written by Raymond J. Mauer and directed by Anthony Rizzo of Archer Productions and made with the help of schoolchildren from New York City and Astoria, New York, it was shown in schools as the cornerstone of the government's "duck and cover" public awareness campaign. The movie states that nuclear war could happen at any time without warning, and U.S. citizens should keep this constantly in mind and be ever ready.

The US government contracted with Archer to produce Duck and Cover. The film is now in the public domain, and as such is widely available through Internet download sources, as well as on DVD.

Original Wasteland Computer Game - May all your thugs explode like blood sausages

Ah the the Wasteland, the original game. Though probably unplayable for those who enjoy 3d splatter brain graphics, its the grandfather of all post apocalyptic computer games. From Wikipedia:

The game is set in the middle of the 21st century, following a nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union. Parts of Earth have been turned into a "wasteland" where survival is the paramount objective. Players control a party of Desert Rangers, a remnant of the United States Army based in the deserts of the Southwestern U.S. that survived the nuclear holocaust, and are assigned to investigate a series of disturbances in the desert. The party begins with four characters, and through the course of the game can hold as many as seven characters by recruiting certain citizens and creatures of the wasteland to the player's cause. Throughout the game, the player explores the remaining enclaves of human civilization, including a post-apocalyptic Las Vegas.

DIY Ammo - stockpile or make your for the Apocalypse

If you remember those old Mad Max movies, ammo is a precious commodity in the Apocalypse. Not everyone lives in the US, where ammunition rains from the sky like manna. So if are in an ammo poor country, making your own or reusing your ammunition is a life saver.

If you can't reuse, then stockpile all you can so you have plenty when the zombies get you...

The Seed Vault in Svalbard - your last hope for veggie burgers after the Apocalyse

These days Vikings are pillaging the world's seed supply (with the approval of all nations) so the world can replenish its plant life in case the of its annihilation here on earth.

A barren, treeless island in the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard may prove to be the last, best hope of agriculture in warmer, more fertile parts of the world. The first batch of 100 million of the most important agricultural seeds were placed into the doomsday repository there today. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is buried deep within a frozen mountainside near the Norwegian town of Longyearbyen that perpetually cools it to –18 degrees Celsius (–0.4 degree Fahrenheit) with or without permafrost. Built to withstand all foreseeable disasters, including a recent earthquake that was the biggest in Norwegian history, it has room to protect at least 4.5 million samples (2.25 billion seeds) in its three man-made caverns.

"The opening of the seed vault marks a historic turning point in safeguarding the world's crop diversity," says Cary Fowler, executive director of the Rome-based Global Crop Diversity Trust, which led the project. "Crop diversity will soon prove to be our most potent and indispensable resource for addressing climate change, water and energy supply constraints, and for meeting the food needs of a growing population."

Rice was the first staple to be stored in the vault—strains from 104 countries around the globe. Sealed in airtight foil packages and encased in boxes, the seeds will remain viable but dormant in the low temperature and humidity conditions.

Wheat, maize, potato, bean and even watermelon seeds will be placed in Svalbard in coming weeks. All told, 268,000 different varieties from Canada, Columbia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Syria, among others, will be the first to enter the deep freeze.

The vault is designed to protect against global-scale disasters—human or natural—that could potentially wipe out agriculture. Similar local seed banks have allowed farmers to recover from recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as provided new varieties capable of growing in changed conditions, such as rice strains that thrive in fields that had been inundated with saltwater after the Asian tsunami in 2004.

"Gene banks are not seed museums but the repositories of vital, living resources that are used almost every day in the never-ending battle against major threats to food production," says Emile Frison, director general of Bioversity International. "We're going to need this diversity to breed new varieties that can adapt to climate change, new diseases and other rapidly emerging threats."

Such gene banks are themselves vulnerable. For example, a typhoon in 2006 wiped out the Philippines's national rice seed repository. "Unfortunately, these kinds of national gene bank horror stories are fairly common," Fowler says.

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is meant to be the backup of last resort, stocked with copies of different crops from national seed storage facilities. For example, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Germplasm System plans to send more than a million seeds to the vault, including sweet pepper, squash and tomatoes.

In the vault's cold isolation, the seeds can keep for hundreds and thousands of years—the grain sorghum alone can last for 20,000 years—effectively allowing agriculture to be restarted in the event of a global calamity, such as nuclear war or catastrophic climate change. But the vault will require some vestiges of human civilization to persist, if only to build the transportation to bring the seeds back out of their new icy home.

"The world's crop gene pool contained in seeds is essential for increasing crop productivity; mitigating climate change, pests and diseases; and ensuring a genetic resource base for the future," said Jacques Diouf, director general of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, in remarks prior to the opening of the vault. "Seeds are the vehicle of life."

Peenemünde is a small German village located on Usedom island on the Northern coast of Germany, and was selected to become a rocket proving ground and research facility after a site at Kummersdorf proved to be too small. The Reich Air Ministry paid 750,000 reichsmarks to purchase the entire northern peninsula of Usedom island in 1936 to develop two major areas of a secret base - the Army Research Center and rocket site on the eastern side, and a Luftwaffe test site on the west.

Camp Bluefields was built in 1910 as a training academy/rifle range for the National Guard. By 1913 problems arose as the bullets rained down upon the residents of Grand View On Hudson, and after multiple complaints and fires, it was shut down. From 1913 to 1918, it was used by the New York YWCA as a womens camp, then it returned to its use as a training camp in 1918 in preparation for World War I.

Resting in the Hudson River, on Pollepel Island, is a crumbling hulk of intricate concrete and brickwork that was once Bannerman's Arsenal. In 1900, Francis Bannerman VI bought the island to store ammunition for his prosperous military surplus business; more specifically, when he bought 90% of the US army surplus after the Spanish-American War ended and needed a place outside of New York City to store it all. The arsenal (sometimes referred to as "Bannerman's Castle") was constructed from 1901 to 1908, and was modeled similar to the architecture of an old Scottish castle.
